TikTok -vs- Instagram Reels: What’s the best platform for your business?

7th August, 2020

TikTok has exploded on our small screens in the past year, and it has created a global buzz around creativity in short-form content.

Currently, ads on TikTok are a lot more subtle; to point that the user doesn’t realise they’re being fed an ad. This is what makes it stand out from other social platforms. Ticktock acts as a blank digital canvas for your brand, having every tool to create something memorable and innovative all in one video.

Instagram Reels vs TikTok

TikTok has created a chain reaction with competing social platforms. Instagram introduced a feature to compete with TikTok last year called Loops, however, it flopped. Now in response to TikToks success, Instagram has reinvented the Loops feature and called it Reels. This feature offers the same video editing capabilities as TikTok does and is an active attempt to keep Instagram users off TikTok.

How Instagram Reels Works

To create an Instagram Reels video, just open the Instagram Stories camera and swipe right to ‘Reels’. You can film clips on the spot or upload older content from your camera roll.

Reels allows you to add audio to your video from a tab featured at the top of the screen.
Similar to TikTok, you can record start and stop videos up to 15 seconds in length.

If you have a public account, you can share your reel to the Explore page in an attempt for it to reach a wider audience. Your video also has a greater chance of being seen if you use popular songs and hashtags. This could result in thousands engaging with your video and creating their own version of creative advertising for your brand.

Are businesses better off using Reels instead of TikTok?

It really depends on the tone and the target audience for your brand. Instagram offers a more matured demographic, while TikTok’s audience is leaning towards a younger demographic of 13-30 year olds.

This is not to say that in the future Reels won’t offer the same amount of recognition for brands through short-form content. It has only been introduced and therefore is still finding it’s feet. As Reels is rolled out in your area, your business should take advantage of the feature and see if it fit’s into your marketing strategy or not.
